The shoes featured on this site were selected to explore the process of describing footwear using the DublinCore metadata schema. Handmade/bespoke shoes, mass manufactured, vintage, and new shoes were selected both for their design features as well as for the challenges involved in describing them. For example, the red cut-out sneakers are "orphan works": I bought them on Etsy.com. The seller described the shoes as Made in Spain, but the label/brand is long worn away - only a mysterious "p p" or "d d" (depending on how you view it) remains in the sole of the shoe. My interest in describing the objects and items that make up our everyday lives is what led me to this project, as did my love of shoes.
